December 2007

On the December edition of Chiming In, we provide strategies for managing holiday stress and depression and learn about a common, though little-known, wintertime mental health condition called Seasonal Affective Disorder. We'll also hear about a new Mental Health America program that works to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness using the stories of real people.

November 2007

On the November edition of "Chiming In," we speak with Emmy Award-winning actor, Joe Pantoliano, star of an acclaimed new Hollywood film called Canvas, and with the film's writer and director, Joseph Greco, who based the movie on his own family's experience with mental illness. We'll also hear a report on depression among African American women and discuss the results of a national survey of Latino parents designed to better understand parent-child communication about bullying, sexual identity and prejudice.

September 2007

On the September edition of "Chiming In," we discuss recent efforts by federal lawmakers to expand access to mental health treatment for millions of Americans and recognize National Hispanic Awareness Month with a look at attitudes towards mental health among Hispanic Americans. We also provide tips for establishing a healthy work/life balance and say goodbye to a close friend and leader in our movement, Bill Compton.

August 2007: Back to Campus

As college students head back to campus this fall, Chiming In looks at some of the unique issues they face. You’ll hear tips for back-to-school stress relief and from a young woman whose experience with mental illness led her to create a mental health organization at her own school. We’ll also examine the recommendations of a report to the President on issues raised by the Virginia Tech shootings and offer suggestions for college students to help prevent future tragedies and promote safe learning environments.

July 2007: Bringing Wellness Home

For the July edition of Chiming In, we showcase the exciting events and guests at Mental Health America’s 2007 Annual Meeting, "Bringing Wellness Home," held last June in Washington, D.C.  You’ll hear from some of this year’s rousing speakers, including U.S. Representatives Patrick Kennedy and Jim Ramstad, the leaders of Mental Health America’s Campaign to Insure Mental Health and Addiction Equity, and Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the Human Genome Research Institute.  We also speak with the people behind an innovative new program working to help mental health consumers quit smoking and with the recipient of Mental Health America's highest honor, 2007 Clifford W. Beers award-winner, Lucindia Claghorn.

May 2007: May is Mental Health Month

For our May podcast, Chiming In focuses on Mental Health Month and vital connection between mental health and overall health.  On the program, you'll hear about the importance of protecting and strengthening our mental wellness, a report on the effects of serious mental illness on longevity and about the national movement to end health care discrimination.  We also chat with Mental Health Month event organizers and tell you how to find and get involved in events near you.
